Life of the Patriarchs Part XI – Jacob on the Run

Main Verse: Genesis 28:1-9

Good morning,

When you read the events that led to the fallout between Jacob and Esau, you cannot but feel for Esau who received a raw deal from his mother of all people. As the story goes, Rebecca had received a prophecy about the two kingdoms in her womb and the “Older would serve the younger” (Genesis 25:23). The reason Isaac’s blessing was so important and why he only had one was that ”deathbed wishes communicated the family fortunes, the father’s life, strength, and authority” (Blessing). It was for this reason I believe Rebecca felt she needed to step in and steal the blessings consequences be damned. So now Jacob is on the run and heading for the place he had never been before.

My encouragement for you today is that you will consider the choices you are making or are about to make and see them through Jacob’s eyes. I say that because we make decisions every day in our lives some of which we commit to prayer and even set the stipulations through which we will know God’s will and then we push through them anyway. Then, like Jacob, find ourselves in a position we would rather not be in.

Father,

The decisions we make today will affect us for the rest of our lives. Unfortunately, our lives unlike a game of golf do not afford us a “do-over” or “mulligan”; we carry those decisions and consequences all the days of our lives. You call us to walk humbly before you all of our life not just the times that are convenient. Please help me today to apply your word to my life so that I might not sin against you.

I.H.S. MK
