Life of the Patriarchs Part XXIII Wise Counsel

Main Verse: Exodus 19

Good morning!

Jethrow Moses’ father-in-law watched Moses listen to the people and hand out judgments. While this was noble, it was also time-consuming and there was not enough time in the day to listen to everybody. Jethro’s counsel was for Moses to divide the workload and delegate responsibility to God-fearing servants. The people that were chosen had to possess certain qualities in keeping with Godly principles. So what we are seeing here is a span of control of no more than 50 people which, is doable. The commanders of 50s answered to the commanders of 100 and the commanders of the 100s answered to the commanders of the commanders of 1000s. With a chain of command established, Moses would be able to bear the load of responsibility without taking time from his family. What Jethro suggested did not dilute Moses’ responsibility, it provided an infrastructure to support it and ensured that Moses could succeed and see his task to completion.

In our churches, the Senior Pastor is responsible for the flock like a shepherd who watches over his sheep. The problem is, in many of our churches the Pastor is involved in every ministry which causes burnout and family issues; when these happen, ministers abandon the flock leaving them to the wolves. One of the enemy’s greatest set of lies is, “You don’t need help because you can do all things through Christ (Philippians 4:13). When we get burned out, He says, “You are all alone” which makes the task seem that much more daunting and compels us to quit. My encouragement for you today is, that in whatever you are called to do, he will send help if you will only ask (John 14:12-14). When you ask the Lord will provide and sometimes that help will come from worldly sources.

Father,

I pray for the Pastors and lay ministers this morning as many are facing daunting tasks and feeling like Elijah – alone. You never meant for us to be alone but yet we do it to ourselves sometimes, against wise counsel. The help you send comes from a variety of sources and sometimes it is from the person we least expect. When you send me into the field, please help to remember these words so that I may be an effective servant for Your Kingdom. I pray this ministry that I may encourage lives for Your glory.

In Jesus’ name

Amen
