Life of the Kings Part 14 – The Giant Comes Knocking

Main Verse: 1 Samuel 17:1-30

Good morning

Goliath of Gath, the Philistines’ champion, challenged the Israelites to send out a man to fight him to determine which king was “The King”.  The giant scared the Israelites so each time the giant challenged them, he would stamp his spear on the ground to emphasize his superiority; each time the spear was slammed on the ground, the Israelites shook in their boots. When David arrived in the camp at the behest of his father, he heard Goliath’s challenge so he asked, “Who is this uncircumcised heathen, and what would be done for the man who defeats him?”.   When his older brother heard David spouting off, he accused David of being a snoop and how he abandoned the sheep that was left in his care. When word got to the King about this young whelp, he thought it was a joke but David stood by his commitment. Saul dressed David in the king’s armor but they were too big or “untested” so David took them off and marched out to face the Giant. When Goliath saw David, he looked down on him like a bear would on a squirrel. So with five smooth stones and his trusty slingshot, David ran toward the giant and landed a stone firmly on Goliath’s forehead which knocked him out. Then taking Goliath’s sword, David cut Goliath’s head off.

Facing our giants is not easy and the problems only multiply when we listen to the naysayers and those of “Faith”. David’s brothers looked down on David, Saul thought it was a joke, and Goliath thought David was little more than a mosquito. Yet David trusted the Lord and acted in faith knowing that the Lord would not fail him (Proverbs 21:31). Battles are not won by talking big nor quoting scriptures, they are won by acting in faith. Standing up for Jesus Christ may seem glamorous but it wasn’t, it was dangerous at times, and it meant standing alone (Acts 24-28). When we act on our calling, it is in our best interest to be obedient and faithful with our mind on our mission, and heart firmly set on the Lord. I can not encourage you enough to use the little battles to strengthen your faith and sharpen your sword so that it divides the flesh from the spirit (Hebrews 4:12).

Father,

Your word says, “In this world, you will have trouble but be of good cheer for I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Today, we struggle with the same giant who is hell-bent on destroying our faith. For this reason, I pray that you will continue to empower your servants to fight the good fight and to free those whom the Devil has captured in “Fear’s net”. Jesus thank you for blazing the trail taking Hell by storm and defeating the final foe “Death” (1 Corinthians 15:20-28, Revelations 21). With the cup of salvation, I lift praise and worship to You Lord, and will show the durability of my faith in my life by doing what You have asked of me just as David had done (Psalms 116).

In Jesus’ Name
