Life of the Patriarchs Part XXV The Aaronic Priesthood

Main Verse: Leviticus 8:6-9

Good morning!

The “Aaronic Priesthood” began when the Lord chose Aaron and his two sons, Nadab and Abihu to offer fire and the sacrifice on the altar; this would be their inheritance until the time of the New Covenant (Luke 22:20). These three men were ordained or set apart for God’s service. The priests were ordained by Moses who placed a dab of blood on the priests’ big toe of their right foot, the thumbs of their right hand, and the love of their right ear, which is symbolic of working and walking for the Lord, and on their right ear lobe, which is a visible mark of consecration (Leviticus 8:22-23). The blood used in the ordination was from the animals that were slain. The reason for shedding blood is to atone for sin (Leviticus 17:11)). Animals were used because they were innocent; for sin to be atoned the person who sinned must pay for it with their life or an innocent person/animal must die in their place. Everything the Priests did and said was symbolic of things to come or, “The perfect sacrifice” (Hebrews 10:4-10).

Jesus was the High Priest of the Covenant for which you and I are a part (Hebrews 8:1-2, Matthew 26:28). The old Covenant Priesthood was done away with the day at Calvary which was symbolized by the tearing of the Temple curtain exposing the Holy of Holies (Matthew 27:51). Jesus’ death wiped out the ordinances written against us for all time so that we do not have to live through the hell of a guilty conscience because of the things we have done. Sin separates us from God but the blood of Jesus united us back with the Father (Isaiah 59:2).

Father,

Thank you for sending your son Jesus to this broken planet. Sin has kept mankind from you since the dawn of time but Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection healed that wound. The Priests of the Old Covenant paid a high price for their job because they had to slay the animals and pour out the animals’ blood to atone for sin; Jesus’ sacrifice was no less horrific. When Jesus’ blood was poured out, You could not look at what sin had caused so you had to turn your back; even with your back turned, pain poured from your heart all because of sin. I am thankful for Your son Jesus. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you.

In Jesus’ Name

Amen
